I Can't Stand Boring Preachers

Since moving to Gainesville several months ago I have visited a lot of churches. Not just Baptist churches either. Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, Independent, Church of Christ, Non-Denominational and others I cannot recall today. All in all I have been pretty disapointed in the quality of the sermons I have endured. I thought, at first, it was me. Being a retired preacher, perhaps I am just too critical. But after looking around at the others in the congregations I have come to the conclusion that they were also suffering.

I think the main problem is that there is not a purpose in the preaching of many preachers. They come to the pulpit and put forth a nobel effort but without a goal in mind. When you don't have a purpose you will surely accomplish little. Their only purpose is to "preach" because it is Sunday and the people have gathered. Surely there should be a better reason than that.

Perhaps I expect too much. However, if I am to devote 30-50 minutes of my time to listening to another person I want to be challenged, inspired, encouraged or at least engaged. Instead, it seems all that I receive is a nice little talk.

I don't want a nice little talk, I want to be preached to!
